Vietnam missed out on their first point in the 2019 Asian Cup as the 2007 champions Iraq came from behind twice to beat Park Hang-seo’s side 3-2 in their Group D opener at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on the evening of January 8.

The Golden Dragons took the lead twice with an own goal by Ali Faez Atiyah (24’) and another from Cong Phuong (42’).

However, the Iraqi side fought back to equalise the score 2-2 thanks to the brilliance of Mohanad Ali Kadhim (35’) and Humam Tareq Faraj (60’). As it looked as though Vietnam had done enough to claim their first point in the 2019 Asian Cup, their hearts were broken in the final minute. Lining up a freekick on the edge of the box, Ali Adnan Kadhim curled a sublime left-footed effort into the top corner to seal a come-from-behind win for the West Asian side.

Despite missing out on points, Vietnam still deserved praise for their brave display against tournament heavyweights Iraq during the entire 90 minutes. Next up for the “Golden Dragons” will be a tough clash with Iran on January 12, while Iraq take on Yemen in another game later on the same day.
