(VEN) - The ASEAN Secretariat, the US Department of State, the US Agency for International Development (IDA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications together organized an ASEAN Rural Connectivity Conference for Education and Development from September 21-23 in Hanoi.
The conference was to research on possible ways for rural communities in ASEAN member countries, particularly those in the Great Mekong Sub-region, to benefit by applying new achievements in information technology in order to increase quality of, and the access to education, healthcare and other vital services.
The conference highlighted the need to devise mechanisms on ASEAN-US Public Private Partnership to provide financial support in connectivity of rural areas that do not have access to ASEAN services. It also presented examples of information technology that has been used in the region and the world, such as videos and high-speed Internet (allowing doctors to recommend patients online), video conferences for interactive classes and teacher training courses, Papua's mechanism to update information about provincial schools via messages, and social networks which connect students in the region to share experiences and information./.
