APEC 2017 gets under way with first event

(VEN) - The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum holds its first event of 2017 with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) from February 18 to March 3 in the central coastal city of Nha Trang. This event has great significance in affirming the cooperation determination of APEC and creating motivation for growth and connectivity in the Asia Pacific region.

With the theme “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering Shared Future”, SOM1 includes 80 meetings, dialogues and workshops, and suggests initiatives for implementation of the four priorities of APEC Year 2017.

It also sets priorities for the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI), the Economic Committee (EC), the Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (SCE) and the Budget and Management Committee (BMC) as well as other APEC cooperation programs, and launches orientations for APEC Year 2017 activities.

Khanh Hoa Province, under the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mobilized nearly 300 people, including 180 volunteers from universities and colleges for the event.

Provincial leaders asked Nha Trang City to control street vendors, while the provincial Department of Transport worked with Cam Ranh International Airport to control illegal taxies. Five hotels in Khanh Hoa have been chosen for SOM1 events, while the provincial conference center will serve as the event’s media center.

The province prepared videos and books and launched exhibitions to introduce its potential, socioeconomic strengths, and culture to guests at SOM1 event veneues. SOM1 participants will be taken to the province’s famous sites, including the Ponagar Temple, Hon Chong, the Doctor Yersin Museum and a Khanh Hoa aloeswood production facility.

Khanh Hoa also prepared gifts for the participants, including aloeswood, coffee and bird nests which are famous specialties of the provicne.

APEC Year 2017 was expected to include about 200 activities to be held in many localities including Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Can Tho, Ha Long (Quang Ninh) and Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa).

The most important week of the year-long event will take place in November in the city of Da Nang. About 1,000 leaders of the world’s leading corporations will come to Vietnam to attend related events.

SOM1 activities are expected to attract about 2,500 delegates from member economies and international organizations,

including business representatives, scholars and others from inside and outside APEC. APEC Deputy Finance Ministers
